People have lived on the plains of North America for thousands of years. The time span from 11,500 B.C. to A.D. 1738 is referred to as North Dakota's prehistory, because there were no written records to tell this history. North Dakota's prehistory is divided into four cultural periods: Paleo Indian, Plains Archaic, Plains Woodland, and Plains Village. These periods are named for the traditional lifestyles that are thought to have been occurring in the area at that time.
