Pouch (Parfleche)

The traditional parfleche, or pouch, a rawhide carrying case, was made from leather and so hard it could turn away arrows when made into a shield. These ‘suitcases’ or backpacks, usually about 1 - 3 feet long, were made in a variety of shapes to hold valuables, clothing, personal items, food and tools. Intricate designs and floral patterns for these pouches were made of dyes or quillwork and were traded among the people of the plains.

'Parfleche'
The name comes from French fur traders who learned that this leather was so tough it could deflect arrows!

What is Raw about Rawhide?
Stiff, thin rawhide was used for making moccasin soles, drums, shields, and parfleche. The word ‘raw’ comes from the way it is made!
